Gardening at ‘The Yard’ in the Mission

There is an expanding network at the moment growing and creating to counter gentrification in the mission district of San Francisco. As part of this, neighbors and community members have been building garden beds, painting, and turning an unused parking lot @ 23d and Shotwell (1245 South Van Ness) into a vibrant ‘village’ of art and gardens.

Sunday, April 28th starting at 11 a.m.
All day work park to make the yard look nice and tidy
Lunch will be served at midday, bring gardeners who like good food and company

Sunday, May 5th starting at 11 a.m.
All are invited to plant the garden together with the neighbors!
at 1245 South Van Ness or 23d and Shotwell, SF
Lunch will be served at midday,
Poder, the Latino grassroots organization, will bring their children!

Word has gone around that on this same day, May 5th at 1 pm, there will be an
“anti-gentrification block party” at 16th and Mission BART Plaza with
free food, live performances, information booths, guest speakers, and a kids’ space
The flyer states, “in the last several decades, thousands of people have been displaced from the Mission District due to evictions, high rents, rising cost of living, transportation costs, and a lack of access to employment and education. In the last several years, rent for many has almost doubled. This Cinco de Mayo, (May 5th), join with Mission resident to speak out and gather to build a culture of resistance against gentrification in San Francisco and beyond.”

A letter from a Bay Area gardener

Beloved citizens of the World,

May this email find you responding to the call of the Earth by being fierce love.

Yes beloved satyagrahis, the “developers” –who are they? what are their names? where do they live?– have some teeth on the urban agriculture movement in the Bay Area.

Here’s the latest post from brother Tree:

http://thefreefarm.blogspot.com/2013/04/keep-on-growing.html

Plenty of time to reflect how to move skillfully.

6:1 is the ratio of empty units to people without houses in San Francisco and yet “the developers” want to build more? People without houses and houses without people. Madness.

What do children have to say about this in the time of climate change? What our siblings of 350.org have to say and do about this?

Is it time to merge the nonviolent direct action with urban agriculture? Is this a warm-up for “Gandhi’s salt” and satyagraha of the 21st century? How do we defend the developers from themselves? How do we serve them by preventing them from their greed/oppression?

We must start disobeying with Great Love now more than ever.

(Growing) in insurgent learning and radical love,
******

Transforming Cities, Urban Gardening: Ignite the Spark

San Francisco currently has 6,000 homeless people and 36,000 vacant housing units. For every person without a home, there are 6 houses left empty. Yet, we bulldoze gardens to build condominiums and apartments…

Seed Camp is set up to greet the Bulldozers Jan 8, 2012

Come support the stewards of the Golden Gate Ecology Center in greeting the bulldozers that are coming to bulldoze the neighborhood gardens at 780 Frederick Street this morning, Tuesday, January 8th, as early as 6 a.m.

Three persons were arrested yesterday, two for sitting in the greenhouse as Park and Wreck planned to remove it, and 1 for potting plants from the garden beds to bring out to the sidewalk so that those from the neighborhood who planted them could retain them.

There is no need to be in an arrest-prone position, and we hope no one is arrested during these actions.

However, if you want to come film, observe, do outreach, help save plants, or in any way support the folks standing up the bulldozers please come out to 780 Frederick Street this morning.

Thank you!!

The Sheriff is here and Bulldozers are on site

#GoldenGateEcologyCenter – 780 Frederick Street, San Francisco, CA

The folks who slept out from the night of January 3d to the morning of January 4th to protect the community gardens were removed from the Golden Gate Ecology Center, and former HANC Recycling and Kezar Gardens site, under threat of arrest and being in jail until Monday on the morning of January 4, 2013.

While most ecology center infrastructure was removed, the greenhouse, garden beds, and other elements of the site are within the locked fences of 780 Frederick Street, and a bulldozer is inside prepared to destroy the garden beds that are currently growing food and medicine, including many permaculture plants and edible perennials.

Please join us throughout the day outside the gate of 780 Frederick Street to discuss next steps for creating an ecology center, which we believe we have shown to be a needed and beneficial space for San Francisco.

See you outside the Golden Gate Ecology Center!
